2016 Morton A. Brody Distinguished Judicial Service Award Presentation and Speech

April 25, 2016, 5:30 PM

Free

The Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement at Colby College has selected Chief Justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye as the recipient of the 2016 Morton A. Brody Distinguished Judicial Service Award. The ceremony and award was established to honor Morton A. Brody, a former Maine U.S. District Court judge and friend of the College who led an exemplary career as a lawyer, judge, and civic leader.

The first Filipina-American and the second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice, Cantil-Saukauye has served for more than 20 years on California appellate and trial courts. She has been appointed or elevated to higher office by three governors.

As Chief Justice of California, Cantil-Sakauye inherited the judicial branch in the midst of severe budget challenges at the height of the economic downturn. She worked tirelessly to successfully restore funding and institute reform, traveling across the state to meet with lawyers, judges, educators, and citizen groups.

Instrumental in the development of several outreach programs aimed at engaging youth in civic learning and democracy, she established a Civic Learning Summit and annual award to recognize public high schools for their community engagement. She regularly hosts students to the Supreme Court and has spoken at some of the most challenged high schools in the state.
