Campus + Community Film Series: Lifeboat (2018)

March 16, 2020, 7:15 PM

Free

Cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

This Oscar-nominated short documentary puts a human face on one of the world’s greatest contemporary global crises while also providing a spark of hope. Filmmaker Skye Fitzgerald follows a group of volunteers from a German nonprofit who risk the waves of the Mediterranean Sea to pluck African refugees from sinking rubber rafts. Some of the people rescued—a small fraction of the thousands desperate enough to risk their lives fleeing unlivable conditions—also share their stories. (Not Rated, 34 min., 2018)
The film will be introduced by Rilwan Osman, executive director of Maine Immigrant & Refugee Services (MEIRS). He also will lead a post-film discussion on the goals of MEIRS and how Mainers can support our immigrant and refugee communities.

This screening is presented in conjunction with the Colby Museum exhibition Hew Locke: Here’s the Thing, on view February 20 through June 7, 2020. The exhibition focuses on maritime vectors of mercantilism, colonialism, post-colonialism, migration, and diaspora. This screening is free and open to all.
