Would you like to learn how to identify some common trees in the Waterville area? Come stroll around town with Dr. Drew Barton, author of The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods and Professor of Biology at the University of Maine at Farmington. You’ll stretch your legs, learn some simple techniques for tree identification, and take part in a wide-ranging discussion of the ecology of Maine forests.

Raised in the southern Appalachians of western North Carolina, Drew Barton is a forest ecologist and science writer. His fieldwork has taken him across the U.S. and to Costa Rica, and he is the author of many scholarly and popular publications. His current research focuses on the response of forests to changing climate and wildfire in the Southwest. Besides writing The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods, he co-edited, with Bill Keeton, the upcoming Ecology and Recovery of Eastern Old-Growth Forests from Island Press. Drew is a co-founder of several conservation organizations, including the Mt. Blue-Tumbledown Conservation Alliance and the UMF Sustainable Campus Coalition. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
