Contemporary Stone Carving in India: Connecting the Present with the Past

March 29, 2016, 6:00 PM

Free

Inscribed steatite seals are among the most distinctive artifacts of the Indus Valley Civilization (2600-1900 BCE). Though these seals were often thought to be highly standardized, recent research has revealed that they are actually highly diverse in style and production techniques. In this lecture, Gregg Jamison will present results of ethnoarchaeological research he conducted with modern steatite carvers in Udaipur, India, to explore and model sources of variation in carving practices among different artisans. Gregg Jamison is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
