Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues (A Lecture by Sister Helen Prejean)

February 12, 2018, 7:00 PM

Free

Sister Helen Prejean has been engaged in prison ministry for more than 35 years and became spiritual advisor to Patrick Sonnier, who was sentenced to die by the electric chair by the state of Louisiana. Her experience became the book Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty. In 1996 the book was adapted into a major film starring Susan Sarandon as Helen Prejean. (A screening of the film will take place Thursday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 100 in the Lovejoy Building.)

Sister Helen has become one of the world’s foremost advocates for the abolition of the death penalty. She has served on the board of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Amnesty International Murder Victim Families for Reconciliation, and is presently chairperson of Moratorium Campaign. Sister Helen will be introduced by a brief performance from Maine Inside Out, which facilitates the creation of original theater in partnership with formerly incarcerated Maine youth—to dialogue about issues related to incarceration.

Sponsored by the Gerrish Fund and the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life.
