The Rise of Disinformation

February 17, 2022, 7:00 PM

Free

Join us for a conversation on disinformation in the digital age with Lisa Kaplan ’13. From public policies to social media tactics, Kaplan will discuss how disinformation has become a serious threat to government, businesses, and individuals alike. What is the balance between freely sharing ideas and protecting vulnerable people from harmful disinformation? How has disinformation been used to threaten democracy? What tools and tactics exist to detect and mitigate disinformation?

Kaplan is the founder and CEO of the Alethea Group, a company created in 2019 to help organizations navigate the new digital reality and protect themselves against disinformation and social media manipulation. She has briefed members of Congress and their staff, advised senior U.S. government and NATO-allied officials, and facilitated conversations between EU/G-7 partner nations on threats stemming from disinformation. For her work, Kaplan was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 and Washingtonian’s Most Powerful Women lists.

All are welcomed to watch live by clicking here: colby.edu/livestream.

The conversation will be moderated by Goldfarb Executive Director Kimberly Flowers and Goldfarb Executive Board Member Avery Marti '22.
