DREAM Action: Voicing Challenges in Our Own Communities

Colby College Museum of Art

No registration required

How does one react to a recent deportation? Where can we go to seek support or are unsure where to start? How can we have a healthy dialogue with someone around immigration in our current political climate? In our town of Waterville Maine, at the beginning of the year we faced a devastating story from a community member, Lexius Saint Martin, Haitian Immigrant who raised his family here in the town but then later was detained in January 2018 and in March 2018 was deported back to Haiti.

We invite you to join us for an afternoon of storytelling around immigration where community members from all over Maine are invited to speak alongside special guest, Mexican Artist, Yoshua Okón. Following the storytelling, we will share resources and exercises on being an active bystander by helping build culture through solidarity.

If you are interested in participating on the panel or wish to know more information about the event you can contact Assistant for Access and Outreach, Miriam Valle-Mancilla at mvallema@colby.edu. We would like to invite as many voices as we can. Anonymous stories can be sent to mvallema@colby.edu. Some questions to think about:

  • What has your immigration experience been like?

  • How long have you been in the United States? How was that journey like?

  • What kind of support have you found in your own community?

  • What does being an immigrant mean to you?

  • Has the phrase "American Dream," ever crossed your mind?

  • What are you thankful for?

  • What is something that you wish to tell to those who "oppose" immigration?

  • Can you share about your identity and your relationship to being X-American? Or do you use your home country as your identity? What is that relationship like?

  • Can you share of moments where you felt like you were not welcomed in your community?

  • How have you defined community here after leaving your home country?

  • How has language played a role in your experience in the United States?

  • Are there pieces of your home country that you wish you can bring to the United States? Or have done so?

  • If you are a child of immigrants, what was that like growing up?
  • What are some ways that you express your culture and identity in the United States?
