SUMMARY:Trampled by Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Trampled By Turtles w/ Breakin' Strings \nDate: Saturday\, July 26 at 7:30pm \nOrganization: Waterville Opera House \nVenue: Waterville Opera House\, 1 Common Street\, Waterville\, Maine \nThis event is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund. \nFor this event\, the orchestra section is "General Admission".\nThe balcony is "Reserved Seating". \nTrampled by Turtles are from Duluth\, Minnesota\, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time\, Simonett had lost most of his music gear\, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who'd ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar\, he began piecing together a new band\, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass\, folk\, and other genres that didn't rely on amplification. \nSimonett hadn't played any bluegrass music before\, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre\, including fiddler Ryan Young (who'd previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll\, the group began carving out a fast\, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass. \nThere crossover appeal has landed them on the #1 spot of Billboard’s Bluegrass Charts on every record they’ve released while playing marquee festivals like Coachella\, ACL Fest\, and Lollapalooza. Countless tours with diverse artists ranging Shakey Graves\, Zach Bryan\, Wilco\, Caamp\, Mt Joy\, Willie Nelson\, Avett Brothers\, Lord Huron and many more have followed solidifying a loyal fanbase. Their last full length album Alpenglow was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. 2025 began with the band releasing a cover of Bon Iver’s From Emma with Caamp’s Taylor Meier (aka Sumbuck) on lead vocals. A few new collaborations are set to be announced in the coming weeks. \nMore Info and Tickets

SUMMARY:Brick
DESCRIPTION:Cinema in conversation: Brick \nDate: April 21 at 7pm \nRuntime: 1 hour 50 minutes \nMPA Rating: R \nOrganization: Maine Film Center \nVenue: Maine Film Center\, 93 Main Street\, Waterville\, Maine \nFree and open to all\, ticket reservations encouraged. \n\n\nWith an introduction and presentation from Steve Wurtzler! \nGritty neo-noir meets high school social cliques in Brick\, Rian Johnson's (American Fiction) directorial debut. After the smart but troubled loner Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) receives a cryptic phone call from his ex-girlfriend Emily\, he is shocked to find a note that leads him to her dead body. Investigating the cause of Emily's death and determined to find her killer\, Brendan must infiltrate the rougher groups at his school and figure out the connection between Emily and a local drug ring. But danger lurks around every corner\, and Brendan soon realizes that people are willing to kill to keep their secrets buried. A terrific cult classic and filled with references to iconic films\, Brick is "a Maltese Falcon where the stuff that dreams are made of rests in the lockers of a well-worn high school"—Michael Sragow\, Baltimore Sun. \nBefore the film\, Steve Wurtzler\, Associate Professor and Chair of Cinema Studies at Colby College\, will introduce Brick in terms of its relationship to the film noir\, a cycle of post-World War II crime films notable for their disillusioned world view\, their characters' apparent moral ambiguity\, and the films' dark visual style\, and discuss how Brick relocates common conventions of the genre to the unconventional setting of a California high school. \n\nReserve Free tickets

SUMMARY:Fairfield Downtown Plan Public Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Fairfield\, ME – April 3\, 2025 – The Town of Fairfield’s Economic and Community Development Committee (FECDC) and the Central Maine Growth Council (CMGC) have launched a planning initiative focused on the redevelopment and revitalization of Fairfield’s downtown area. A key phase of the planning efforts include participation from Fairfield residents and business owners to collect public input\, which will inform the downtown plan. Included in the public input strategy is a digital survey\, and public workshop. \nFairfield’s Downtown Plan Public Workshop will be held on April 15\, at 6:00 PM at the Fairfield Community Center located at 61 Water St. Presented by CMGC\, the workshop will feature interactive and informational boards that highlight progress on the Downtown Plan\, allowing residents and business owners to visualize proposed concepts and provide valuable input. CMGC will offer an overview of what the Town has accomplished from the previous plan\, and provide updates on the proposed and planned timeline for developing a new set of goals and priorities. This hands-on opportunity for the public to interact with committee members and Town leadership will ensure that community members can engage directly with the planning process and influence the next stages of downtown development. \nThe survey is designed to solicit feedback on various aspects of downtown development\, including land use\, housing\, transportation\, waterfront enhancements\, economic growth\, and community amenities. The results will provide the FECDC\, CMGC\, and Fairfield Town Council with critical insights to guide the allocation of resources\, prioritize capital investments\, and create a vibrant\, thriving downtown that meets the evolving needs of residents and business owners. \nThe survey invites participants to provide input on a wide range of topics\, including: \n\nPrioritizing new business development\, public green spaces\, and housing opportunities.\nEvaluating opportunities for enhancing the downtown waterfront with parks\, trails\, and gathering spaces.\nIdentifying transportation improvements\, such as cycling infrastructure\, public transit options\, and enhanced walkability.\nAssessing the types of housing and business developments that should be encouraged in various zones of the downtown area.\n\nThe FECDC and CMGC will use the survey results\, along with the feedback gathered during the public workshop\, to prioritize investments\, support business growth\, and ultimately\, craft a plan that is reflective of the shared needs and vision for growth of Fairfield's residents and businesses. All residents and business owners are encouraged to participate in the survey.
