SUMMARY:Met Opera Encore: I Puritani
DESCRIPTION:For gorgeous melody\, spellbinding coloratura\, and virtuoso vocal fireworks\, I Puritani has few equals. This January\, the first new Met production of Bellini’s final masterpiece in nearly 50 years — a striking staging by Charles Edwards\, who makes his company directorial debut after many successes as a set designer — arrives in cinemas worldwide. The Met has assembled a world-beating quartet of stars\, conducted by Marco Armiliato\, for the demanding principal roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo\, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War\, with baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo\, betrothed to Elvira against her will\, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle\, Giorgio. \nThis performance is a high-definition encore broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. \nAll Met Opera Encore shows >> \nAdmission: $16-$19. This screening is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund. \ntickets

SUMMARY:The Nerd
DESCRIPTION:An aspiring architect in Terre Haute\, Indiana\, Willum Cubbert often speaks of the debt he owes to Rick Steadman\, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that\, as long as he is alive\, “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you” — so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” — a bumbling oaf with no social sense\, little intelligence\, and less tact. And Rick stays on and on\, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another\, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence — a dire development which\, happily\, is staved off by the surprising “twist” ending of the play. \nSix Performances:  \n\nJanuary 30 & 31 + February 6 & 7 at 7:30 p.m.\nFebruary 1 & 8 at 2:00 p.m.\n\nTickets: $32 - $34. SUMMARY:Cinema Explorations: Familiar Touch
DESCRIPTION:Date: January 31 + February 1 at 10am \nRuntime: 1 hour 30 minutes \nMPA Rating: Not Rated \nOrganization: Maine Film Center \nVenue: Maine Film Center\, 93 Main Street\, Waterville\, Maine \nFree and open to all\, ticket reservations encouraged. \nPart of Cinema Explorations\, a wintertime community-curated film series. \nMany films show us experiences we have never had nor do we ever expect to have. Ruth (Kathleen Chalfant) and her family are experiencing something we will find familiar. It is also likely that we have pondered whether Ruth’s fate could be our own. When her son (H. Jon Benjamin) arrives\, she mistakes him for a suitor. Their “date” takes them to an assisted living facility Ruth does not remember she had previously selected for herself. Among her fellow memory care residents\, Ruth feels certain she is somewhere she does not belong. As she slowly begins to accept the warmth and support of care workers Vanessa (Carolyn Michelle) and Brian (Andy McQueen)\, she finds new ways to ground herself in her body even as her mind embarks on a journey all its own. \nThis coming-of-old-age feature from writer-director Sarah Friedland (the 2025 Independent Spirit Someone to Watch Award-winner) compassionately follows the winding path of octogenarian Ruth’s shifting memories and desires while remaining rooted in her sage perspective. "Friedland’s film\, as sharp as it is soft\, conveys both the terror of losing the life you recognize\, and the intermittent\, fragmented joy of finding it again."—Guy Lodge\, Variety. \ntickets

SUMMARY:Audition: Once Upon a Mattress
DESCRIPTION:Auditions 1: UPDATED Saturday\, January 31 at 2pm \nAuditions 2: Monday\, February 2 at 6pm \nCallbacks: Wednesday\, February 4 at 6pm \nLocation: Studio 1902\, Paul J. Schupf Art Center\, 93 Main Street\, Waterville \nOrganization: Waterville Opera House \nAUDITION LOCATION: Candidates should enter through the Paul J. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince\, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is\, until the “shy” swamp princess\, Winnifred the Woebegone\, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test\, marry her prince and help Lady Larken and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs\, by turns hilarious and raucous\, romantic and melodic\, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans.
