SUMMARY:The Nerd
DESCRIPTION:An aspiring architect in Terre Haute\, Indiana\, Willum Cubbert often speaks of the debt he owes to Rick Steadman\, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that\, as long as he is alive\, “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you” — so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” — a bumbling oaf with no social sense\, little intelligence\, and less tact. And Rick stays on and on\, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another\, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence — a dire development which\, happily\, is staved off by the surprising “twist” ending of the play. \nSix Performances:  \n\nJanuary 30 & 31 + February 6 & 7 at 7:30 p.m.\nFebruary 1 & 8 at 2:00 p.m.\n\nTickets: $32 - $34. This event is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund. \nmore info + tickets

SUMMARY:Cool Runnings
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 8 at 12:00 p.m. \nMonday\, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. \nCelebrate the beginning of the Winter Olympics with the Jamaican bobsled team! \nJamaican sprinter Derice has dreams of competing at the Olympics\, but he never expected to be disqualified in the eligibility trials. Refusing to give up\, he enlists the help of a disgraced former Olympian to train himself and three other athletes to become Jamaica's first bobsled team. The only problem is\, how do you train a bobsled team that's never even seen snow before? \nBased on the real story of Jamaica's inaugural bobsled team and featuring John Candy in one of his best roles\, Cool Runnings is "a sweet-natured\, high-spirited comedy\, that rare movie that plays effectively to all ages. Even rarer\, it celebrates genuine sportsmanship\, placing the emphasis back on how the game is played in the face of the winning-is-everything philosophy that permeates every aspect of contemporary life."—Kevin Thomas\, Los Angeles Times. \n(PG-13\, 108 min.\, 1993) \ntickets + trailer

SUMMARY:Thelma & Louise
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 14 + 15 at 1:30pm \nRuntime: 2 hours 10 minutes \nMPA Rating: R \nOrganization: Maine Film Center \nVenue: Maine Film Center\, 93 Main Street\, Waterville\, Maine \nThis film is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund. \n\n\n\nTwo women\, a turquoise Thunderbird\, the ride of a lifetime. \nMeek housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) joins her friend Louise (Susan Sarandon)\, an independent waitress\, on a short fishing trip. When a chance encounter at a roadside bar goes horribly wrong\, their weekend getaway becomes a high-speed flight from the law as the two women attempt to flee to Mexico\, meeting a host of characters along the way that include the dashing-but-dangerous J.D. (Brad Pitt's star-making role) and a sympathetic police officer (Harvey Keitel). There's no trip like a girls' trip! \nWinning an Oscar for Callie Khoury's screenplay and nominated for five others\, including two Best Actresses and Best Director\, Ridley Scott's legendary feminist ride-or-die road trip is an utterly irresistible reimagining of the previously male-dominated road odyssey genre that reminds us of the resources\, capabilities\, and freedoms we may not know we possess. "Thelma and Louise celebrates the myth of two carefree souls piling into a 1956 T-Bird and driving out of town to have some fun and raise some hell. We know the road better than that\, however\, and we know the toll it exacts: Before their journey is done\, these characters will have undergone a rite of passage\, and will have discovered themselves."—Roger Ebert.
