KVCAP Celebrates 50th Anniversary of
the Week of the Young Child

From April 12th through April 16th, KVCAP's Head Start programs at Educare Central Maine and in preschools through Somerset County celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Week of the Young Child. This tradition started in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children to recognize the importance of early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities.

The weeklong celebration included daily learning themes: Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday, and Family Friday. Children joined in many fun activities in their programs and at home with their families.

“This is a fun and very important week as we work to raise awareness about the benefits of high quality early care and education programming for children, families, and communities," said Sarah Lavallee, KVCAP Director of Early Head Start. "Access to high quality childcare is critical for so many families who are in the workforce or striving to achieve their own education goals.  We celebrate WOYC each year in recognition of the importance of early childhood education!”

Emergency Rental Assistance Program

KVCAP is accepting applications for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. This program helps pay rent and utility costs for eligible Maine renters affected by COVID-19. We are partnering with our fellow Community Action Agencies and MaineHousing to run this program throughout Maine. MaineHousing has program information and the application link on their website HERE.

Do you have financial challenges due to COVID-19 other than rent and utlities? Call KVCAP at 859-1500 to speak with a Resource Navigator.

We wish you well!

KVCAP participated in the United Way of Mid-Maine's virtual Canstruction event this year, creating a wishing well out of common food items. The structure is currently housed in the breakroom at our corporate headquarters on Water Street in Waterville. In early May, all items will be delivered to the People Who Care Food Cupboard in Madison for distribution.

Income Inequality in America

The U.S. income divide has not always been as vast as it is today. Have you ever wondered how wide income disparities in America really are? Click HERE to view a very insightful 6 minute video - while it may be 9 years old, the numbers are even more alarming today!

According to the PEW Research Center:

  • Over the past 50 years, the highest-earning 20% of U.S. households have steadily brought in a larger share of the country’s total income.
  • Overall, 61% of Americans say there is too much economic inequality in the country today, but views differ by political party and household income level.
  • The wealth gap between America’s richest and poorer families more than doubled from 1989 to 2016.
  • Middle-class incomes have grown at a slower rate than upper-tier incomes over the past five decades
Postcards From Around the World

Children at the KVCAP/Fairfield Primary Preschool have been learning about geography in a fun and unique way. Friends and family members were asked to mail postcards to our classrooms and the mail carrier has been busy delivering to us! Postcards from all over the WORLD have been received so far, with more coming in each day. The postcards are being displayed on a map in the hallway for all children to see. This has been a great way for the children to learn about different places around our country and beyond!

Due to COVID-19, the Explorer has shifted from it regular routes and is currently using an on-demand system. To schedule a ride, please call 859-1500. To learn more about where we go, click HERE.
