The 2017 Cinema Explorations series will kickoff on January 14 and 15 with screenings of The Anthropologist. Director Seth Kramer will join us for a Skype Q&A after the screening on Saturday, January 14!

In The Anthropologist (Unrated, 78 min.), Kathryn joins her mother Susie Crate in studying communities in Siberia, in the Pacific islands of Kiribati, and in Peru coping with climate change. The documentary focuses on its effects on people. It emphasizes human resilience to adapt. Anthropology is, broadly, the study of man and humanity’s story is full of adaptations. Mary Catherine Bateson, daughter of Margaret Mead, shows us what anthropologists do. Teenaged Kathryn sees the world, meets people, and journeys from childhood to adulthood where she will decide her future. We feel that this film has wonderful lessons to impart — not the least is the importance of respect, understanding, and hope. (View Trailer.)

Cinema Explorations is a venture of the Maine Film Center dedicated to fostering the voices and choices of our community of film lovers. The winter film series is programmed by a local, volunteer steering committee. Program goals are to present works of cinema from around the world that will enrich, educate and entertain filmgoers and encourage the shared experience of communal film viewing and thoughtful discussion.

All screenings take place at 10:00 and are followed by a community Q&A. Bagel Mainea will provide free bagels!

Individual tickets to Cinema Explorations screenings are $8 each; a festival pass, which admits one to all 6 films, costs $30. Railroad Square Cinema punch cards, complimentary tickets, and Maine Film Center membership benefits may also be used.
