24-Hour Play

August 2, 2019, 7:00 PM

What is a 24-Hour Play?

This is a fun, free theater intensive. In 24 hours we write and rehearse short original works to be performed the evening of August 3.

What does it involve?

You sign up to write, direct, and/or act a short (10-15 minute) play. Writers get to choose their topic and create the work starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 2. You can write from home or join the rest of us at our location (The one listed in registration may change depending on number of writers). We stay up until our plays are written, eat junk food and caffeinate, and help each other come up with cool ideas. Don't start writing before 7 p.m. on Friday, but if you have ideas you can bring notes.

Directors come at 7 a.m. on Saturday and read the scripts, choose which script they would like to direct (Don't worry, every script will get a director) and when the cast arrives at 8 a.m., they cast from those present.

Performers come at 8am, get cast in a play (sometimes more than 1) and rehearse the show all day. Although memorizing all those lines is a great way to show off your talent, we can work around those who cannot learn them all in such a short time by strategic placement of scripts on props, etc.

When do we perform?

Starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday we perform these plays. Invite your friends, family, and talent scouts to watch the culmination of your hard work (you can even invite your enemies just to shove how awesome you are in their faces).

What do I get out of it?

Glad you asked! If you are a writer you get a really cool script that you can either work on to create a longer play or just have in your collections. Some writers have gone on to present these scripts at festivals and other performances. If you are a director or actor you get to say you were part of a world premiere of a script and showcase some talent. All around, you get to be part of something absolutely new and creative.

Also, you will get a midnight snack and coffee if you are writing, coffee and donuts on Saturday, and supper Saturday night. If nothing more, come for the free food.

What if I have no experience writing, directing, or acting?

Now's your chance! This is not just for experienced thespians, this is for everyone. You will never know if you are a good playwright/director/actor if you never try, come do something you haven't done before. If you have done one or two of the three, challenge yourself to try something new.
