Hello film lovers,
I’m writing to share an update about the 23rd Maine International Film Festival. While the ongoing pandemic has radically changed the ways that we can enjoy cinema together, we're excited to announce a partnership with the Skowhegan Drive-In Theater, where we'll host MIFF from July 7-16.
We're proud to bring MIFF to the big screen given the many challenges theaters and cinemas have faced—and we intend to do so with full adherence to all state requirements and with additional safety measures in place. This year we'll offer 10 nights of programming at the drive-in, comprised of World, U.S., and East Coast premieres, as well as a showcase of Maine Shorts. Online, we'll make additional features and short films available for paid streaming directly through our website, and will provide opportunities for you to engage with filmmakers through live Q&A discussions.

We’re writing to share that the MIFF23 program and schedule are now available to view at MIFF.org, where you can also pre-order individual tickets and passes.
Several premieres and special events comprise this year’s festival program. Opening Night, July 7, is the Northeastern premiere of HEROIC LOSERS, a comedic, suspenseful heist film starring Ricardo Darin in which a group of “losers” find a way to get back at those who stole from them. The Centerpiece film is the World Premiere of AMERICAN THIEF, an explosive, original and timely thriller set against 2016 election night. In the Closing Night’s THE LAST SHIFT, a midwestern white working-class lifer, played by Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, discovers uncomfortable truths about himself and the culture and world he’s rarely questioned when he starts training his replacement, Jevon, a bright, aspiring young black man.
One of the Maine Film Center’s core missions is to educate by exhibiting films that advance knowledge and understanding of U.S. and world culture. Toward that end, we reaffirm and pledge to be unceasing in our determination and commitment to exhibit and otherwise support films that depict and express black lives. This year’s MIFF is dedicated to the lives of all people of color lost to racism, both systemic and individual. In an effort to support training, development, production, funding, and distribution for black filmmakers at a time when this work is more important and challenging than ever, we will provide the opportunity both online and at the Festival box office for you to provide support and empower black filmmakers to tell stories. The Maine Film Center will select a charitable organization dedicated to this work to receive all donations made to MIFF23.
We look forward to seeing you at the movies. |
