On the Road: Readfield

September 10, 2020, 3:00 PM4:00 PM

Free

Join On the Road as we visit the Readfield Union Meeting House. Nestled in Readfield’s small community is a historical brick building that is a true artistic treasure. Supporters have recognized the importance of restoring and preserving Maine’s second oldest brick church which originally served as a “ meeting place” for community members.

The murals of Prussian painter, Charles Schumacher, adorn the interior of this historical site. Schumacher’s painting employed the style of trompe l’oeil and his Maine oeuvre was comprised of 51 completed pieces created from 1860-80. The Union Meeting House displays his last known surviving work. The hand painted stenciled windows and a working 1890s pump organ are two other unique features you’ll find here.

A formal restoration program at the Meeting House began in 2009 and today the restoration is nearly complete. With the rebuilding of the floor support system, the Meeting House is now open to concerts, talks and visitors.

Tune in to our Facebook Page at 3pm on Thursday and look for our Facebook premiere! The video will also be saved in our video section for viewing at any time after the Facebook premiere.

Generous support for this program is provided by our Ambassador Sponsors: Colby Center for the Arts and Humanities, Kennebec Savings Bank, and MaineGeneral Health and Advocate Sponsor: Bangor Savings Bank.
