Red River

March 14, 2016, 7:00 PM

$5

Howard Hawks’ epic yet intimate 1948 western is at once “classic” and “revisionist,” pitting John Wayne’s so-determined-he’s-tyrannical settler against his much more humane “adopted son” Montgomery Clift as they launch an insane cattle drive that will either make or break a lifetime of work on the frontier. Howard Hawks’ amazing western is quite unlike those of John Ford with its emphasis on the group of men involved in the drive, its tougher-than-the-guys heroine (Joanna Dru) and its languorous appreciation of the Texas landscape, its beauty and emptiness. (Unrated, 126 min., 1948)

“One of the greatest American adventures is really a Western Mutiny On The Bounty.”—Leonard Maltin.

Tickets: $9 for adults, $5 for students.
