Solar Eclipse Viewing
August 21, 2017, 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Drop by the L.C.Bates Museum to try some Earth and Space activities or view the Solar Eclipse. The Eclipse begins at 1:30 PM, is at maximum at 2:45 and ends at 3:55. It will last 2 hours and 26 minutes. We will have free, safe solar viewing glasses available and some Earth and Space activities that include a model of how the eclipse works.
Partial solar eclipses happen when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, but the Moon only partially covers the Sun's disk. During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon, the Sun and Earth don't align in a perfectly straight line, and the Moon casts only the outer part of its shadow, the penumbra on the Earth. From here in Maine it will look like the Moon has taken a bite out of our Sun. Let's hope for clear skies for good viewing, but we will live stream too.
