The Gender Wage Gap

Pay Equity, the Gender Wage Gap and Policies Toward Pay and Parenthood

Fifty-seven years after the Equal Pay Act in 1963, the median woman who works full-time earns only 82 cents for each dollar earned by her male counterpart. Recent economics has found that, on average, women’s annual earnings fall after having children but men’s do not.

On January 15, Samara Gunter (Associate Professor of Economics at Colby College) will discuss explanations of the gender pay gap and how policies that directly and indirectly shape parenthood in the United States contribute to differential wage outcomes. Prof. Gunter will also discuss potential labor market effects of policies to improve pay equity, including Maine’s April 2019 law banning employers from collecting salary histories of prospective employees prior to making an offer of employment.

Please join us at 6:30 pm social (half) hour, 7 pm presentation in Parker-Reed Room SSW Alumni Center. The event is sponsored by the Waterville Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW); the event is free and open to the public.
