The Taos Society of Artists and the Changing Image of the Indian

The oeuvre of the Taos Society of Artists, an organization of Eastern transplants who painted the peoples and landscapes of the American Southwest during the early 20^th century, has long been regarded as authentic glimpses into the lives of Pueblo communities untouched by modernity. Professor of art history at James Madison University John Ott will take up the impressive collection of TSA canvases in the Colby Museum of Art to demonstrate how they tell us much more about significant changes in the way Anglo Americans thought about and interacted with the nation’s indigenous peoples.
