Buena Vista Social Club
Wim Wenders (Perfect Days, Wings of Desire) once again features at the Maine Film Center for the 25th anniversary of Buena Vista Social Club, a documentary about a group of Cuba's finest musicians, who reenter the business in the wake of Castro's rule. Renowned guitarist Ry Cooder (who scored Wenders' Paris, Texas) assembles the musicians in the hopes of recording an album and performing live in Amsterdam and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Due to the contentious relationship between the United States and Cuba, this is the first time that the group are able to travel to the United States. Between interviews with the band members and footage of the sold-out concerts — and with an incredibly catchy soundtrack — Buena Vista Social Club is a cinematic sensation and Academy Award nominee long overdue for a revisit.
