The Seagull

A play about relationships, love and unrequited love. Madame Arkadina, a celebrated but fading actress, and her lover, the famous writer Trigorin, are visiting Arkadina’s sickly brother at his country estate. Arkadina’s son Konstantin, a frustrated playwright, is in love with the ingénue Nina. Nina, however, seeks the love of Trigorin. The schoolteacher Medvedenko loves Masha, the daughter of the estate’s steward, but Masha is in love with Konstantin. Polina, married to Ilya, is having an affair with doctor Dorn. Chekhov’s play, rich in complex, contradictory characters, requires a large ensemble cast and is considered one of the first plays in modern drama to establish the pre-eminence of character over action.
