Painting Birds To Save Them

Please join us for an encouraging discussion of how a small group of impassioned nature conservationists fought and changed the course of bird extinction and bird decimation. From the 1860s to the 1930s, these activists employed the power of the written word and the great appeal of historic bird paintings in order to create an army of bird protectors and, eventually, millions of modern-day environmentalists. They won a great victory by the mid 1930s but then new challenges arose, including the use of DDT and other pesticides and herbicides, loss of habitat, plummeting insect populations, and climate change. We will briefly explore the modern-day landscape and discuss how to empower ourselves and each other in order to make a difference.
Eddie Woodin, Colby Class of 1969, is an avid collector of bird art and associated materials that together tell the story of bird extinction, survival, and challenges. His vast collection, gathered over 20 years, received a Collecting Works on Paper Award from Historic New England in 2017.
A reception with refreshments starts at 3:15, followed by the 4 p.m. program. Selected items from Woodin’s collection will be on view.
