Cinema in Conversation: La Llorona
November 11, 2020, 7:30 PM
This fall we introduce a new virtual film series hosted by the Maine Film Center. Filmmakers, film experts, policymakers, and journalists from around the country and the world will join us on Zoom to discuss a film.
Join a conversation with Director Jayro Bustamante, led by Ana Almeyda-Cohen and Tiffany Creegan Miller, Assistant Professors of Spanish, from Colby College, as they discuss his film LA LLORONA (THE WEEPING WOMAN).
A young Maya maid in the household of a genocidal Guatemalan general ushers in the return of the repressed in a postcolonial supernatural fable that continues the legacy of a long-standing Latin American myth. (Not Rated, 2020, 97 mins.)
Prior to watching the films, hear Professor Almeyda-Cohen and Professor Miller’s mini lectures on Maya communities in Guatemala and the film’s inclusion of a long-standing Latin American legend, respectively. Then, after watching the film, join the live discussion with the filmmaker and scholars.
Register to receive the mini-lectures before watching the film.
Watch on Shudder with a 7-day free trial.
