WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING WORKSHOP

 July 20, 2023, 12-1:15pm

Sayon Camara Drumming + Waterville Creates

 Paul J Schupf Art Center

Journey to an African village with Sayon Camara of Guinea, celebrated drummer and steward of the ancient traditional music of his people. Learn the drumming, music, song, story and traditional language from the village where Sayon delighted in his childhood and served as a djembefola (one who plays the djembe drum). Experience or no experience, we welcome all, whether you think you have a good sense of rhythm or not. Village music and song is not difficult, yet it is richly textured. Sayon is a gentle, skillful teacher who loves to share the music of his culture with others. You will find his teaching passionate, respectful, loving and joyful!

Pre-registration required. Children under age 16 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and realized in partnership with the Colby College Museum of Art and its Lunder Institute for American Art.

Waterville Creates’ 2023 Call for Proposals (CFP) for Community-Centered Arts Programming is the final phase of the Common Threads project. The proposals funded through the CFP represent a diverse range of artists and disciplines and are designed to attract people of all ages and backgrounds to the Paul J. Schupf Art Center by providing accessible, meaningful, and joyful arts experiences while also responding to issues and themes that are relevant and important to our community.
