Awakening Your Performance, a Workshop with Leymis Bolanos Wilmott

October 2, 2021, 10:00 AM11:00 AM

Free

This community class invites movers of all ages and experiences to warm the body up from the inside out, using the floor, stationary and locomotive movement. Participants will then work on pushing their performance boundaries and qualities by making real connections and igniting calls and responses from within the community of movers. The use of prompts helps to guide movers through a series of improvisational experiences, all while encouraging each dancing body to make new discoveries on entering the community, the responsibility of shared space, and switching roles from the observer to the performer. This class will start in a circle and end with the participants sharing about their experience and how it can transcend onto the performance stage.

Leymis Bolaños Wilmott, a Cuban-American artist, mother, and teacher with rhythm inextricably in her bones, found her voice through dance at an early age. As the Founder and Artistic Director of Sarasota Contemporary Dance and Artist-in-Residence at New College of Florida, she has the privilege of using those bones to create art and be an influential member of Florida’s dance community. Leymis has been featured in Sarasota Magazine’s Arts & Cultural Issue: Ladies of the Arts, Top 28 Most Powerful People in the Arts, and most recently SRQ Magazine’s February 2021 cover story. Leymis pioneered the Dance and Healing certificate at the University of Florida and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Performance and Choreography from Florida State University.
