Central Maine Historic Architecture Talk

January 20, 1:30 PM3:00 PM

Free

This event was postponed from Jan 13, 2024

To start off our new year, we will switch things up a bit for our history talks. Please note, for ease of daytime driving and something to get us out of the house to socialize on a winter afternoon, let's try the third Saturday afternoon, January 20th, at 2:00 pm.

Let us extend a warm winter 2024 welcome to our guest, Dan Mitchell. A former carpenter who focused on old buildings, Dan is the property manager of Vaughan Homestead in Hallowell, an 18th century residence with nearly 200 acres of publicly accessible woodland managed in conjunction with the Kennebec Land Trust. Dan has taught architectural history courses for Waterville Adult Ed and Augusta Adult Ed and has done presentations for various organizations in the Kennebec Valley region. He currently teaches a course called "Central Maine's Architectural History" through UMaine-Augusta's Senior College and hopes to spread an appreciation for historic preservation generally, Maine's cultural past in particular.

I have already learned a lot from Dan during a walk through the 1814 Redington home, and I know you will, too. Whether you own an old home or not, you will appreciate Dan's engaging presentation with visuals and a chance to ask questions. Through photos, you will get to see parts of the Redington Museum you would not typically get to explore, or perhaps notice, during a building tour. Dan will tie in features about the historic home. Photos will be posted around Marriner Hall during social time and his presentation for you to see aspects from cellar to attic and in between.

Please join us for social time from 1:30-2:00. Light refreshments will be available. Dan Mitchell’s talk will begin at 2:00.
