David Byrne’s True Stories
March 30, 2:00 PM
$15This event has sold out!
Maine Film Center is proud to present David Byrne’s True Stories (PG, 99 min., 1986) in an original 35 mm print. Byrne will attend in-person for a Q&A after the film.
Byrne’s feature directorial debut is a surreal and satirical look at the grand characters that can and do exist in the most normal of places. As the small — but growing — town of Virgil, TX gears up to celebrate its 150th anniversary, an unnamed visitor (Byrne) arrives in a red Chrysler convertible. As he passes through Virgil, he interacts with plenty of odd and unusual characters. With karaoke-style lip syncing events, a fashion show heavily inspired by inanimate objects, conspiracy-laden church sermons, and much, much more, True Stories explores what makes this tiny town tick in the build-up to its sesquicentennial celebration.
Admission: $15. This film is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund.
This program is offered in conjunction with Byrne’s visit to the Waterville Opera House as part of his uplifting Reasons to Be Cheerful speaking series. All proceeds from both programs benefit the Youth Arts Access Fund.
