Failure to Adjust: How Americans Fell Behind in the Global Economy

October 26, 2016, 4:15 PM

Free

In an election year in which controversies over trade, immigration, and job loss have dominated the presidential election campaign, Edward Alden will discuss how and why the U.S. government failed over the past half century to respond effectively to a more competitive global economy on issues such as trade, currency, investment and offshoring, worker re-training, infrastructure, and support for innovation. He will explore the current controversies over U.S. trade policy and talk about how the United States could reassert itself as the leader in setting rules for international economic competition that would spread the benefits of global trade and investment more broadly.

Reception to follow outside Room 343 in the Diamond Building.
