United Way of Mid-Maine to Hold Drive-thru Food Drive

Food insecurity impacts families throughout the mid-Maine region. According to FeedingAmerica.org, the food insecurity rate in Somerset County is 16.6% and is 13% in both Kennebec and Waldo counties. Food insecurity refers to the lack of access a family has to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members. Families often find themselves having to choose between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. Food banks and pantries work tirelessly to combat food insecurity in their communities.

United Way of Mid-Maine (UWMM) will be holding a drive-thru food drive on Friday, September 18, 2020 from 8am to 2pm that will benefit food banks and pantries throughout the mid-Maine region. The event will be held at the Skowhegan Community Food Cupboard located at 16 Cariani Street in Skowhegan, ME.

“Families continue to feel the effects of COVID-19 and are struggling to access basic, everyday needs.” Says Bethany Drouin, Resource Development Director for UWMM. “Supporting our local food banks is one way that we can help mid-Maine families struggle a little less.”

Community members, groups and companies are welcome to bring donations of non-perishable food items and other everyday essentials to this event. Volunteers will be ready to take your donations directly from the trunk or backseat of your car.

By working together, while staying apart, you can help make an impact on families in your community.
