Join us as Dr. McCarthy, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, talks to us about the History of Pharmacy! This should be a very interesting event and we will have the Apothecary open for viewing after the event!
Dr. Robert L. McCarthy was appointed the 4th Dean of the University of New England College of Pharmacy on August 1, 2018. Previously, he served as the 7th Dean of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy from 2003 to 2013, after serving as Interim Dean since July 1, 2002. He joined UConn in August 2001 as Head and Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. He has also held faculty positions at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Northeastern University, and Boston University. Dr. McCarthy earned his B.S. in Pharmacy, M.S. in Hospital Pharmacy, and Ph.D. in Law, Policy and Society at Northeastern University in Boston. He also completed an ASHP-accredited residency in hospital pharmacy at the Massachusetts General Hospital.Dr. McCarthy was a 1999-2000 American Council on Education Fellow at Rivier College (now University) in Nashua, NH, a small, liberal arts institution.
Dr. McCarthy is past chair of the Board of Directors of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology & Education (NIPTE), a national consortium of 13 universities focused on research and education in pharmaceutical technology. Professionally, Dr. McCarthy has been an active member of state and national pharmacy organizations, especially the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). He is a past chair of the AACP Section of Social and Administrative Sciences. He served as national president of the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society from 2010-2012. He has also developed pharmacy residency programs in both community and managed care pharmacy. Dr. McCarthy has served on visiting teams for both the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Dean Award from the American Pharmacists Association—Academy of Student Pharmacists. In 2013, he was named a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association.
