Jan. 6, 10 a.m. — Tour the Museum’s Amazing Animals: Explore the museum to find and learn about baboons, duckbilled platypus, anteater, red panda, Caribou, Bontebok and other animals in the museum exhibits. The collections include animals that have developed unique adaptations for living in varied environments. Learn about some with horns, a mammal that lays eggs, a slow moving animal and why some animals are different colors.
Jan. 13, 10 a.m. — Earth and Space Kit Activities: Try NISE Earth and Space and NASA activities that were given to the museum to discover fun facts about our universe and home planet. Send up a stomp rocket, make a cloud in a bottle, examine the colors of light, make a small solar system, create a vacuum, explore shadows and more. Learn about why eclipses happen and the solar eclipse coming here on April 8, 2024. See how to safely see the sun with solar glasses..
Jan. 20, 10 a.m.- Owl Things Considered: We think the owl family (technically two families) are so intriguing and extraordinary, we’re giving them a day of their own! Come learn about the amazing adaptations owls use to rule the night, and how to identify common Maine owls by sight and sound!
Jan. 20, 1 p.m. — Animal Tracks: Game Mammals have unique feet. Explore the advantages of the different adaptations of mammal feet. What makes a good foot for running, climbing, swimming and more. Stamp tracks and make a track card game to take home.
Jan. 27, 10 a.m. — Old Time Toys: Take a trip through history and explore some of the popular games kids played a hundred years ago! Roll a hoop, make a top game and play it, jump rope, try a ring toss, write on a slate board as you sit at an old school desk, and more. Look through a stereopticon and make a persistent vision activity to take home.
