Opening Day Celebration: Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change

June 3, 2023, 10:00 AM5:00 PM

Free

Join us for an opening day celebration for our new exhibition Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change. Curator David Park Curry will lead gallery tours and sign advance copies of the accompanying exhibition catalogue.

Tours will be offered at 2 and 3:30 pm, and he will be available to sign books and talk with visitors in the museum lobby 10:00 –11:00 a.m., 3:00 – 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 –5:00 p.m. Space is limited in the gallery; please pre-register for the tours here.

The exhibition features works by artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) focused on urban sites undergoing rapid transformation during the Victorian era. Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change invites us to consider the multivalent implication of paintings, drawings, and prints that silently witnessed the struggles of the working poor, while at the same time romanticizing poverty for a rising middle-class art market. Dr. Curry will share insights about the development of this exhibition and highlight works on view.
