Palestinian Perspectives and the Future After the Gaza Crisis

Fateh Azzam is a human rights researcher and consultant and a member of the Maine Coalition on Palestine. Born a stateless Palestinian refugee, he became a U.S. citizen in Portland, Maine in 1978. His professional experience spanned work in civil society, academia and the United Nations, having served as Middle East Regional Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, founding director of the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University of Beirut, and director of the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Program at the American University in Cairo. He was Director of the Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq and is Commissioner Emeritus of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Human Rights.
Fateh currently volunteers on several international boards and advisory committees including for The Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion in The Hague, the Syria Legal Development Programme in London, and the Boston Consortium for Arab Region Studies and Visualizing Palestine. Fateh has published studies and book chapters on human rights and humanitarian law, the responsibility to protect, the Arab and Palestinian human rights movements and citizenship in Palestine and the Arab region. He has authored two plays, Ansar and Baggage, both on topics related to Palestinian experiences of life under occupation, and adapted and co-directed The Gaza Monologues in Portland, ME, earlier this year.
