Screening of The Innocents of Florence and Opening Reception for Art Exhibit Summer Romance

August 25, 2019, 12:00 PM

Art curator and restorer Alice Smith Duncan works with The Innocents' Florence-based director David Battistella to introduce Maine audiences to the deep beauty of the city’s art, history, and compelling resonance with the current plight of children at the US/Mexico border. This is its first U.S. showing.

When art restorers in Florence begin work on a 600-year- old painting, they lead the journey to uncover the story of the city’s forgotten children, and the women who saved them. It’s 1410 and there is a huge social problem in Florence. Babies are abandoned and dying at an alarming rate. To solve the problem Florence’s humanists organize and build a hospice for babies to assist young mothers. To celebrate the completion of the new building in 1446, they commission a painting to act as the symbol for the new Institute. In 2013, the very same painting sits in a museum within the original building. Two women, an American and an Italian, are tasked with the restoration of the work due to be displayed after a renovation and reopening of the museum. (Unrated, 93 min.)

In conjunction with The Innocents of Florence special screening event, Railroad Square Cinema will also open a new Art in the Lobby show featuring the art of Angela Anderson. The opening reception runs from 2:00 to 4:00. Light refreshments and libations will be served.
