The Godfather, Part II
May 9, 2022, 7:00 PM
Though it's the original The Godfather, shown recently in its 50th year restoration at Railroad Square, that has the greatest fame, it's director Francis Coppola’s immediate follow-up (not a sequel, but an extension of a huge saga he'd planned all along) that is easily the superior film — one of the true highpoints in the history of American filmmaking.
Two years after Part 1, The Godfather, Part II was nominated for 11 Oscars and won over half of them, including Best Film, Best Director and Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (for Robert DeNiro, appearing as the younger version of Vito Corleone, played by Marlon Brando in Part 1.)
In The Godfather, Part II, the word "epic" really takes root, as Coppola winds the story back to Corleone as a young man in Italy, and then sweeps us into the future with a panache and deep emotion that ends up, amazingly, speaking to a larger vision of the American experience. "Coppola furnished a fully-fashioned gangster melodrama in the first film: in this one he stretches his talent to encompass a genuine American tragedy" —Alexander Walker, London Standard. "It's an epic vision of the corruption of America" —Pauline Kael, The New Yorker.
