The Owners is a brilliant Czech comedy exploring a community of apartment owners struggling to work together to make decisions about the building in which they all live. Put differently, what makes their exercise of local democracy so fraught and difficult? Our group watched in amusement as these men and women bantered, bickered, bargained, and blocked various proposals to protect the lives and property of everyone in the building. We were all engaged in nodding, smiling, and, for some, explosions of out-loud laughter. Some of us acknowledged this hit close to home—in our own work groups and in our town meetings. You may see parallels in other places. Please join us for this thought-provoking, if highly entertaining hidden gem of a comedy.
