The Fits

April 19, 2023, 7:00 PM

Free

This coming-of-age film is a unique collaboration between director Anna Rose Holmer and a cast of young dancers and actors from the dance group Q-Kidz in Cincinnati. Royalty Hightower brilliantly portrays Toni, an eleven-year-old girl who becomes curious about the “fits” of the teenagers in a local dance troupe. The experimental score by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans highlights choreography as both a literary theme and a cinematic technique, creating a soundscape that foregrounds the sensuous and the body. Their sound design also reflects the increasingly common practice of what scholars have called the integrated soundtrack, in which effects, music, and dialogue subvert traditional soundtrack hierarchies and blur distinctions between score and ambient sound.

(Not Rated, 72 min., 2015)

Part of the Listening to Film series. Screening preceded by a discussion of the film’s sound design by Colby students in MU237A (Film Music and Sound). Free admission, thanks to sponsorship from Colby’s Music Department, Department of Cinema Studies, and The Center for the Arts and Humanities.

Reserve free tickets in advance. Without an advance ticket, seating is not guaranteed. Any remaining tickets will be issued at the Box Office before the event.
