Northern Light Inland Hospital Closing

For more than 80 years, Northern Light Inland Hospital has proudly provided compassionate, patient-centered healthcare to families in Waterville and the surrounding communities. Every step of the way Inland has been supported by generous donors who have shared a vision for building a healthier community close to home. That is why it is so difficult to share with you that after lengthy, thoughtful consideration, Northern Light Health has made the decision to close Inland Hospital, including all services and clinics in Waterville, by May 27.

This decision was made only after reviewing and considering many alternatives. The challenges that Inland faces are multi-faceted and include aging facilities that would require significant investment, high operational costs, low reimbursement, and a tight labor market. Additionally, the needs of Inland patients and the resources available to them in Waterville and the surrounding communities have changed over the years, affecting how and where people choose to receive care. Given these factors, the model of care currently in place in Waterville is not sustainable.

Inland’s top priorities are helping patients safely transition their care to other facilities within the Waterville area and supporting employees through this change. Inland will begin reaching out to patients immediately, to help them navigate their options and work with them to transfer their care to the providers of their choice. Inland team members will be encouraged and supported as they pursue new opportunities within Northern Light Health and with other healthcare organizations in the region.

Please note, this change does not affect Lakewood Continuing Care, as they are progressing with plans to transition to a joint venture with First Atlantic later this year.
