Volunteer Opportunity to Help Refugees
Capital Area New Mainers Project (CANMP)is working with Catholic Charities to use the Good Will Hinckley (GWH) campus (about 15 minutes from Waterville) as a Welcome House for new refugees. This would be temporary housing for about 4-5 families at a time. Rather than staying in hotels or AirBNBs (which can be exceedingly expensive), the new families would stay at GWH temporarily, until they find more permanent housing. The campus has a couple dorm-like "cottages" where families can stay, and Catholic Charities would offer services directly on site. There would be a Catholic Charities staffer there during business hours.
CANMP is working with Catholic Charities to organize volunteers who can go regularly (once or twice a week) to the GWH campus to help families with:
- transportation runs (to the grocery store, food bank, etc.)
- children's activity programming (a game of soccer, a walk on campus, storytime, etc.)
- English tutoring
- cultural orientation sessions
The first families arrive the first week of October, 2023. If you would you be interested in helping out, contact CANMP at newmainersproject@gmail.com
