Slab Building at the Salmon Summit
Saturday, June 13 at 10am–4pm
Ticonic Gallery + Studios
Art of Clay Studio, Paul J. Schupf Art Center, 93 Main Street, Waterville
Join ceramic artist Benjamin Lambert for a one-day, hands-on workshop focused on turning flat images into three-dimensional, illustrative sculptures. You’ll learn how to create simple paper templates using photographs and sketches, then use those templates with clay slabs to build expressive fish forms. Together, we’ll shape and manipulate “blanks” based on Maine fish species into creatures with distinct personalities, explore construction methods for both wall-hanging and free-standing pieces, and talk through the materials and finishing processes Ben uses to complete his ceramic work.
Raised along the banks of the Androscoggin River in Greene, Maine, Benjamin grew up both captivated by its natural beauty and aware of its long history of pollution. What began as a concern for that single river gradually broadened into an ongoing awareness of water-based pollution more generally—rivers, watersheds, and coastal systems shaped by industry, runoff, and environmental neglect. This perspective continues to guide his work, as he uses clay to create an uncanny sense of beauty while quietly advocating for stewardship, care, and a more responsible relationship with the natural world.
