Excel in Education
In 1996 at the Community Catalyst Excel in Education was the second priority of the community. If our first priority is to develop a vibrant economy perhaps this button tells the story of why education would be a close second.Although in most people’s minds education remains a very top priority, very few REM community projects have arisen in this area. However, much has been happening in the greater Waterville area in our schools and among community leaders.
REM did hold a REM Forum on early childhood education. People came from all over the state of Maine from all levels of government and institutions of learning. The Educare Center in Waterville is a high quality learning and development center partnering with families and communities to ensure school readiness for children birth to age five.
Project 2020, a community initiative (NOT REM’s) dedicated to ensuring that 80% or Waterville 4th grade students read at or above proficiency level, is a coalition of community leaders addressing literacy issues. Leadership of this project is very strong and your participation would be welcomed. You can join on the Project 2020 website.
