Summer Theme: Outcasts: How the World Looks from a Distance
Bestsellers to Be Discussed:
Girl on a Train by Paula Hawkins (June 24)
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning, flashing past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stopping at the signal that allows her to watch each day the same couple breakfasting on their deck. Their life, as she sees it, is perfect—until she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but now everything is changed. Rachel goes to the police and becomes inextricably entwined in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?
A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy O’Toole (July 29)
An American comic masterpiece. “John Kennedy O’toole’s Ignatius J. Reilly is a huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. O’Toole’s story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans’ lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures.”—Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times
Grendel by John Gardner (August 26)
The acclaimed retelling of the classic Old English poem “Beowulf” from the monster’s point of view! Portraying Grendel as an antihero, the novel deals with finding meaning in the world, the power of literature and myth, and the nature of good and evil.
