Sponsored by the Colby Museum of Art, this film series is inspired by the exhibition Alex Katz: Theater and Dance, which is on view now at the Colby College Museum of Art. Open now through February 19, 2023. All screenings are free and are September Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. The films will be introduced by Kris Bergquist, Mirken Curator of Education and Engagement at the Colby Museum of Art.
September 10: Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters is a feature documentary that connects our world today to the fear, anger, grief, and hope of the AIDS pandemic that was at the heart of Bill T. Jones’ ballet, D-Man in the Waters, when it debuted in 1989. As we see a group of young dancers learn this work, new understandings of the power of art in a time of plague emerge from the experience. September 17: Frances Ha stars Greta Gerwig as a young woman in New York City apprenticing for a modern dance company, throwing herself headlong into her dreams despite dwindling success. This film brings forth a story of frustration and joy, capturing that moment of being young and unsure where to go next. The film was shot in black and white by director Noah Baumbach, stylistically described as French New Wave revivalism by many critics. (R, 86 min., 2012)
September 24: And Then We Danced follows Merab, a devoted dancer who has been training for years with his partner Mary for a spot in the National Georgian Ensemble. The arrival of another male dancer, with a rebellious streak, sparks a rivalry and romantic desire that challenges his ideas about what he wants from his life in a country where traditionalism reigns in the world of dance, and in society as a whole.
