On the Road: The Solon Meeting House

Part 1

Many of us are lamenting the limitations of travel this summer. Thankfully, we live in a state of extreme beauty with many fascinating places to visit. Here at WC!, we realize there are numerous destinations off the beaten path where we can explore Maine’s incredible art, artists, and natural landscape. The On the Road series is designed to explore areas that are art destinations in their own right and/or sites where we can create our own works of art.

This week we will travel to the South Solon Meeting House, an historic building of incredible beauty located in Central Maine. Often referred to as “Maine’s Sistine Chapel”, the meeting house is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture in a rural setting.  The structure built in 1842 has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980. The interior reveals an array of stunning frescoes painted in the “buon fresco” style by students and professional artists from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
