This classic film will mark its 70th anniversary in 2020. It’s from the master Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and starred the great Toshirô Mifune as the notorious bandit Tajômaru and actress Machiko Kyô — who died at age 95 in 2019 — as the bride of a samurai (Masayuki Mori) who has met an untimely end. What happened? Rape? Adultery? Murder? Everyone involved has a story, but they don’t agree. Who should be believed? A fixture on lists of all-time greatest movies, the film received an honorary Oscar as the best foreign film released in the United States in 1951. Running time: 88 minutes.
Screened as part of our winter film series, Cinema Explorations.
