Stuff the Bus
August 17, 2016, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Here in mid-Maine, about 1 out of every 5 children under the age of 18 live in poverty. 1 out of 4 children are hungry, and do not know where their next meal is coming from, if they aren’t getting it at school. Working families facing the choice of “food or rent” are not even able to consider stretching their budget to include the expense of school supplies on their shopping list. Children – and their learning – suffer when they show up to school unprepared on the very first day.
In response to this need, United Way of Mid-Maine and Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (KVCAP) are collaborating to collect school items which will then be distributed to children in school districts throughout northern Kennebec and Somerset Counties.
United Way of Mid-Maine is holding “Stuff the Bus” Day of Caring events at the Waterville, Skowhegan, and Palmyra Walmarts on Wednesday, August 17. During this time the public is asked to join the Day of Caring by bringing their donated items to help fill the bus with all of the essential items kids need at the start of the new school year. Suggested items for donation include binders, colored pencils, erasers, glue sticks, notebooks, pencils, pens, and backpacks.
