Fish Tales: The History of the L.C. Bates Blue Marlin Caught by Ernest Hemingway

Susan F. Beegel will present her illustrated lecture, “A Hemingway Marlin in Maine,” that was inspired by the L. C. Bates Museum’s skin mount of a blue marlin caught by Hemingway off the island of Bimini in 1935. She calls the talk “a wild fish chase across the first half of the twentieth century” that will tell the story of two men connected by a big fish — Maine taxidermist Fred C. N. Tea With Mattie Wadsworth

Mattie Wadsworth was an avid amateur entomologist who lived on a farm in Manchester, Maine during the years 1862 to 1943. She was a scientist in a time when women were not often welcomed into the fold. As an entomologist Mattie collected many insect specimens on her farm including a type specimen of a dragon fly. Naturalist Camp

Campers will observe and explore their natural world and all its wonderful wildlife. Spend a day at the pond, a day in the woods, a day in the fields and days in the museum getting in touch our local animals and plants. For ages 6-12. Camp runs July 29 – August 2, 9 a.m. – noon. Cost is $65.
