REM Award Honorees (2018) — Betty Ferland (Lakewood Continuing Care)
Betty Ferland began volunteering at Lakewood two years ago; she fell in love with the residents as a result of her daily visits with her mother, who was a resident for four years. Betty was inspired and impacted by the work Lakewood employees were doing and felt compelled to volunteer to help make the residents’ life at Lakewood even more pleasant and fun.
Always smiling and quick to laugh, Betty helps whenever and wherever she is needed. As part of her routine, she provides transportation tor the residents to and from their unit and the activity room, interacts with everyone in a loving and caring way, assists with weekly bingo games, participates in the monthly Hokey Pokey and Chicken Dance, helps with van rides, and much more! Betty is known for being equally invested in every resident of Lakewood.
Betty, now retired from 34 years of electrical sales, enjoys spending time with her dog, Fiona, and her family, and she enjoys the challenge of jigsaw and crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and reading.
“I love seeing the smiles on the residents’ faces, seeing some of them interact when they are normally withdrawn, knowing that we are bringing some happiness and laughter to them,” she says. “At first, I was afraid it would be depressing, but instead, it has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. The residents bring me such joy, and it keeps me out of trouble!”
Betty’s contagious laugh, sense of humor, positive personality, reliability, and willingness to always help is what the residents and staff adore about her. We are so grateful for her commitment and dedication to Lakewood and are proud to honor Betty Ferland with the REM Volunteer Award!
