101 Things at the Pond

September 17, 2016September 18, 2016

Free

Calling all frog catchers! Nature enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join us at L.C. Bates Museum on September 17 & 18 to kick off our 101 Things at the Pond Day, a weekend that celebrates 101 years of exploration and creature catching at our beloved “Frog Pond”! We will have free programs running 10AM to 4PM on Saturday, September 17 and 12 PM to 4PM on Sunday, September 18. Activities will include Walking the Watershed, Testing the Waters, Studying Edge Species, Paint Like Monet, and Wetland Insects. Tour the museum’s wetland critters and enjoy light refreshments throughout the weekend!

Designed and built in 1915-1916 by the Olmsted Firm’s landscape architect Carl Rust Parker, the pond (originally known as “The Artificial”) was first used as a water source for possible fires, but quickly became a place for learning and leisure year round. From ice skating to frog catching to scientific research, children and adults alike have found joy in the flora and fauna the pond and its surrounding habitats have to offer for 101 years. We encourage you to keep the tradition of wonder alive with this weekend full of fun activities!

The 101 Things at the Pond Day is presented in collaboration with the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend that is supported in part by the Maine Community Foundation. The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend hopes to encourage children across Maine to engage and connect with the bountiful natural resources the state has to offer.
