REM Award Honorees (2002) — Jill Gilbert (Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter)
The Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter has been serving the homeless and displaced of Central Maine for over ten years. Initially an all-volunteer venture, the shelter now employs three full-time and five part-time staff.
Nonetheless, volunteers remain a vital part of the organization. Without the dedication of the volunteer Board of Directors and community members who selflessly donate their time, money, and in-kind goods, the shelter would not exist today. Without special volunteers, such as Jill Gilbert, the shelter could not function.
Jill Gilbert is a lifelong resident of the Waterville/Winslow community. She has volunteered for most of her life. She was active in the Friends of the Maine Children’s Home for many years, chairing many committees and serving as an officer. She served on the board of directors of the Mid-Maine Medical Center Credit Union and is a member of the MaineGeneral Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary.
For the past ten years, Jill has been volunteering as accounts payable clerk for the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter. She is also a member of the shelter’s Golf Tournament Committee, which has raised thousands of dollars for the shelter. She is currently president of her condo association, having served on its board of directors for ten years.
Jill has worked for over twenty years as business manager of Waterville Anesthesia Associates. She has been blessed with a family and friends and believes strongly in giving back to the community.
